Legality
Are hidden security cameras legal?+
Video-only cameras in your own home are legal in all 50 states, including cameras built into everyday objects. The hard limits: no recording where people expect privacy (bathrooms, changing areas, private bedrooms of guests or employees), and no recording inside space you rent out to others. Why don’t your cameras record audio?+
Audio recording is governed by federal wiretap law plus state consent laws, and about a dozen states require every party’s consent. Video-only keeps your setup clearly legal in every state, so that’s all we sell.
Do I have to tell my nanny or cleaner about a camera?+
Some states require disclosure to household employees, and we recommend it in all of them. A disclosed camera still deters problems and protects both sides. See the nanny cam guide for specifics.
Product & setup
Do the objects actually work?+
Yes. The clock keeps time and wakes you up, the charger charges, the speaker plays music, the porch light lights the porch. The one exception is clearly labeled: the Vantage ceiling unit looks like detector hardware but is not a smoke or CO detector and must never replace one.
What WiFi do the cameras need?+
A 2.4GHz WiFi network, which every home router provides. Most disguised cameras (ours included) don’t connect to 5GHz-only networks. If your router broadcasts one combined network name, the camera finds the 2.4GHz band itself during setup.
How does footage storage work?+
Each camera records to a microSD card (up to 128GB, sold separately) on a loop: when the card fills, the oldest footage is overwritten. At 1080p, a 128GB card holds roughly two weeks of motion-triggered clips. You can also view live and save clips to your phone through the app.
Is there a monthly fee?+
No. The app is free, footage stays on your card, and there is no subscription or cloud contract.
How hard is setup?+
Plug in (or charge) the camera, open the PlainSight app, and follow the pairing steps. Most people are watching live video within ten minutes. The Beacon porch light is the one product that involves wiring, and it’s a standard sconce swap.
Do they work at night?+
The 2K models use 940nm infrared night vision, which produces no visible glow. The smaller 1080p models use low-light sensors that need some ambient light (a nightlight or streetlight is enough).

How fast is shipping?+
Standard US shipping takes 3-5 business days and is free on orders over $75. Below that it’s a flat $6.95.
What does the warranty cover?+
Every camera carries a 12-month warranty against defects. If it stops working under normal use, we replace it.
Is the packaging discreet?+
Orders ship in a plain brown box with a neutral return label. Nothing on the outside says what’s inside.
